The hard coded fi ligature is just a stylistic choice where and hard coded fractions actually has meaning. 1/2 can mean something else then ½.2 -

It is not just about the feature syntax. But some lookup types can store ranges and that can save some space. Same for cmap.1 -

The different renderers produce too different output that it would be misleading to have any one preview and to difficult to implement all different rasterisers/system versions.1
